I had an idea for a piece of music and decided to record it1.
Then I decided to make a video for it using a ton of weird slow motion footage I’d recorded over the years. Watch and listen here;
I’ve been steadily writing and recording music for the past few years and I enjoy it. What is it for? Who cares, I enjoy doing it. Not every hobby needs an audience.2
The video is kind of an idea I spent a bunch of time playing with back during my degree3. I really like overlaying video and getting some ambient shapes conjuring images inside your head. Footage here is comprised of but not limited to;
Some sea life at Matlock Bath Aquarium4
A cold windy day up a nearby hill5
A different windy day up a nearby hill6
An afternoon spent finding out whether my iPhone really was waterproof by dunking it in a murky stream up a nearby hill7
A boat ride near Port de Sóller in the Mediterranean8
A visit to Dark Matter in Berlin9
This particular piece of music was cobbled together pretty quickly10 in GarageBand. I have nicer software, but GarageBand is quick and easy and my audio interface is already plugged into that machine. So as well as not being a software snob, I’m also lazy. I wanted to write something that would make good use of a cheap distortion pedal I picked up a while ago11. I grew up on quietLOUDquiet music and I’ve always loved a song with almost jumpscare-levels of distorted walls of noise12. I’m pretty pleased with how this came together. Enjoy!
Everyone writes and records music for fun, right?
He says, literally signposting the thing he just made to an audience. Ugh.
Multimedia Design, University of Wales First class honours Baybeee. I say this here because literally nobody ever asks me about my undergraduate degree. Barely even in job interviews.
6/10, might visit again if pushed.
I love a cold windy day up a hill.
See! I told you so!
My two joys - being up a nearby hill and trying to break my phone.
What a coastline! 10/10 would recommend.
Don’t google it, just go and visit. 10/10.
A couple of hours?
A Cadine Tantrum pedal.
Nobody does this better than Mogwai. Their song Xmas Steps is fantastic. Look it up and listen to it in the dark with your best headphones.
