It’s called The Things I guess so here's a thing I made.
Literally photos of my kitchen bin, dressed up as compelling content.
In and amongst the stuff I make, there’s stuff I don’t talk about- stuff that’s behind an NDA, not quite fully cooked yet or basically just a bit boring.
Here’s one of those things that might just be ‘a bit boring’ but it occupied me for half an hour this morning so here we are, talking about my kitchen bin.
A few days ago the handle came off the bin lid. Some little plastic clips broke when I very enthusiastically slamdunked something.
It’s the kind of plastic that you can’t superglue (cyanoacrylate to fellow nerds) so here’s what I did;
I used the broken handle to draw around some wood I had laying about. I think it’s 8mm maple? I also had some mahogany hanging about but figured the lighter maple would look nicer against the black plastic of the rest of the bin. (I forgot to take photos while I was doing it, so excuse the make-believe for the camera here.)
The I used my scroll saw to roughly chop it out. Again, I forgot to take photos so just imagine it’s an action shot;
I used my drill press to countersink some holes for the screws that’d hold it in place:
Then I sanded it nice and smooth.
I drilled slightly too small holes in the bin lid for the screws I’d chosen. They fitted great and the plastic was soft enough that I didn’t need to tap out a thread on them, just screw them into place. I screwed it all together.
I also oiled the wood using some Danish oil. It seals the wood and makes it easier to keep clean. My brother insisted to me one time that it’s pronounced ‘Dan-ish’ rather than the way you’d pronounce the nationality of someone from Denmark. That sounds like a total dirty lie though and I’m not going to fall for it. Nice try, JON. I’ve not looked this up to confirm it, but this is coming from the guy who’d sneak olives into desserts and call them ‘mystery grapes’ so I feel right to doubt his motives.
And there it is. In all it’s wooden-handled glory.
Fascinating, right? The cupboard under my kitchen sink isn’t particularly photogenic, but if you ever come around to my house, I’ll let you try the bin out. It’s a pretty nice upgrade.
You may be asking yourself ‘I didn’t subscribe to this newsletter to get content like this did I?’
Turns out you did!
More ‘things’ as they happen.
